This is the privacy policy for hiiAmber.com, operated by Amber Technologies, Inc. It explains what we collect when you visit the site or place a pre-order, why we collect it, who else sees it and what you can ask us to do with it. It also sets out how we intend to handle voice on the Amber device, which is still in development.
What we collect
- Order information: your name, email address, delivery and billing address, the finish you chose, and what you paid.
- Contact information: anything you send us by email or through the contact form, and the thread that follows.
- Website information: pages viewed, the device and browser used, approximate location from your IP address, and the link that brought you here, collected through our store platform and its analytics.
- Marketing consent, if you have asked for First Edition news, and whether you opened or clicked those emails.
We never see or store your full card number. Card details go straight from checkout to our payment processor, which returns to us only the last four digits, the card type and whether the payment succeeded.
Why we use it
To take and fulfil your order, to email you a ship window and tracking, to answer your questions, to handle refunds, returns and warranty claims, to keep the site working and to detect fraud, and to meet our legal, accounting and tax obligations. Where you have asked for it, to send you occasional news about the First Edition. We do not make automated decisions about you that have a legal effect.
The legal basis
We process order and contact information because it is necessary to perform the contract you entered when you ordered, or to take steps before it. Analytics and marketing are processed with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. Fraud prevention and record keeping rest on our legitimate interest in running the business and on the law that requires us to keep records.
Checkout and payments
The store runs on Shopify, and checkout is hosted by Shopify. When you place an order, Shopify processes your details on our behalf in order to complete the sale, and its own privacy policy also applies to that part. Payment is handled by our payment processor over an encrypted connection. Neither we nor Shopify stores your full card number.
Voice and the Amber device
Amber is in development and has not shipped, so no device has collected anything from anyone yet. This section is our stated intent for the First Edition, and the final device privacy statement is published in full before the first units ship.
- Amber is being built to wait for the wake phrase "Hii Amber" and to act on what you say after it. She is not being built to record your home in between.
- Requests are processed to answer them. Where a request needs a service outside the device, such as a search or a music service, that part of the request goes to that service in order to fulfil it.
- You will be able to review and delete voice history, and to opt out of any use of your recordings to improve the product.
- We will not sell voice recordings, and we will not use what is said in your home to target advertising at you.
- If any of this changes before shipping, we will publish the change and tell every reservation holder rather than quietly amending this page.
Who we share it with
Only the companies that make an order possible: our store platform, our payment processor, the carrier that delivers your unit, and our email provider. Each receives the minimum it needs to do its part and none of them may use it for anything else. We may also disclose information where the law requires it, or to a buyer if the business is ever sold, in which case this policy travels with your data. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for anyone else's advertising.
International transfers
Our providers may process data in a country other than yours. Where that happens, we rely on the safeguards those providers put in place, such as standard contractual clauses, so your data keeps the protection it started with.
Cookies
The site uses cookies to hold your cart, remember your preferences, keep checkout secure and understand how the site is used. Some are strictly necessary and the store cannot work without them. The rest are analytics. You can block or clear cookies in your browser at any time; the store will still work, but your cart may not survive between visits.
How long we keep it
Order records are kept for as long as accounting and tax law requires, which is normally several years. Support threads are kept for two years so we can pick up an old warranty claim. Marketing contacts are kept until you unsubscribe. Analytics data is kept in aggregate. Everything else is deleted once it is no longer needed.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, ask us to stop or limit how we use it, ask for it in a portable format, or withdraw your consent to marketing at any time. Every marketing email carries an unsubscribe link. Write to support@hiiamber.com and we act on any request within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the data protection authority where you live.
Security
The site runs over an encrypted connection and payments are handled by a PCI compliant processor. Access to order data is limited to the people who need it. No system is perfect. If a breach ever affects your data we will tell you and the relevant authority promptly rather than quietly.
Children
hiiAmber.com is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us information, write to us and we will delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version is posted here and the date below is updated. Material changes are emailed to anyone holding an open pre-order.
